Blundell’s is celebrating an exceptional academic achievement as Ed has been selected to represent the United Kingdom at the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in Bucaramanga, Colombia this July.

Following outstanding performances in Rounds One and Two of the British Physics Olympiad, Ed was one of just fifteen students nationwide invited to attend the final team selection camp at the University of Oxford during the Easter break.

The five-day camp involved an intensive programme of advanced physics, with teaching from university lecturers from 8am to 9pm each day, culminating in demanding practical and theoretical examinations. Following this rigorous process, Ed was chosen as one of only five students in the UK to make the national team.

This is an extraordinary accomplishment, not only for Ed personally, but also for the school. It is wonderful to see a pupil from the South West recognised among those selected from across the country for the UK Physics team.

Mr Douglas Morrison, Head of Physics, said:
“To see Ed selected as one of just five students to represent the UK at the International Physics Olympiad is a moment of enormous pride for us all. His perseverance through years of gruelling competition is a testament to his exceptional talent and character.”

Dr Jonathan Ratcliffe, Deputy Head Academic said:
“Ed’s selection is richly deserved. He combines exceptional intellectual ability with curiosity, humility, and a genuine love of physics. To reach this level nationally is outstanding, and we are immensely proud of him.”

This marks Blundell’s second International Olympiad team success in six years, following his older brother Harry’s selection for the UK team at the International Chemistry Olympiad in 2021, a remarkable family achievement and a powerful reflection of the calibre of scientific talent and aspiration nurtured at the school.

Ed will travel to Colombia in early July to compete against the world’s leading young physicists.

We wish him every success.
